ONAR strive towards creating a culture of respect within the many facets of their business. From the materials used to the handcrafting, the core responsibility is to create novelty in harmony with the broader environmental and social landscape.
ONAR is proud to work with skilled artisans to create pieces of exquisite quality. The garments are produced by leather craftsmen who have worked with the materials for years and highly respect the materials they use. The outcome is a traceable luxury product that is guaranteed to last for generations.
The vivid leather colours are created using vegetable dyes. The entirety of their shearling products is made using chrome-free tanning. The vegetable tanning process preferred by ONAR is a slower, more specialised method, ensuring the endurance of the garment without using chemicals that are damaging the environment. This process results in biodegradable products.
Shearlings are 100% ethically sourced from Europe - Greece, Italy, Spain, Britain and Iceland and the collections are handmade in Greece and Helsinki, Finland. ONAR commits to a zero-waste policy, and its pieces are created using only secondary and existing materials.
In working with shearling and lamb leather, ONAR's concern is that they respect the natural beauty of the wool, and no living creature is exploited or harmed for their products.
ONAR only works with suppliers who guarantee that the sheep have lived freely, not in a cage. Garments are made only from the by-product lamb leather from the food industry that would otherwise go to waste. ONAR also exclusively works with tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group, which on their behalf control sustainability practices within the leather industry.
